Westboro Baptist Church and Its Hellfire Message

Westboro Baptist Church member Benjamin Phelps...

I have read a few unfavorable descriptions of the Reverend Fred Phelps of Westboro Baptist Church. He and his congregation are out there today holding almost nothing back as they cry out, and spare not against the sin and evil that is destroying this nation and the world.

[The sins one commits destroy themselves. God made us in his image but when we disobeyed in Eden we installed a self-destruct button into our existence that is getting pressed every day. But God is not going to hold Christians responsible for what this nation is doing.]

Their message is America Is Doomed.

When the atheist-comedian George Carlin died Reverend Phelps made a video and put it on You Tube saying plainly George Carlin the potty mouth is in hell.  The God he mocked is now mocking him.

He recently said that Lady Gaga is a bad influence on any who listen to her. His daughter said that Elizabeth Taylor is now in hell alongside Michael Jackson. He understands that whoever does not profess Christ with a life to back it up is going to hell.

He is against what is against God. How he delivers it is simply his method and style. He is no Joel Osteen who smiles and tells you exactly what you want to hear.

They who cry out and preach against sin will never be loved or wanted. On the contrary they are hated and not appreciated by those who want to sin and call it freedom.

Phelps says God laughs as he sees the sinners fall into hell. His picketing of soldiers funerals with offensive signs that read Thank God For Dead Soldiers.

Reverend Phelps sees the war as sin and the dead soldiers as God’s judgment on America for sending them to war. His absolute stand against homosexuality with his God Hates Fags signs is right out of the Old and New Testaments. He sees homosexuality as the Bible says it is; an abomination. It is disgusting to God. And his hatred of abortion (murdering babies) and fornication (sex before marriage)  and divorce (usually caused by adultery) is all Biblical also. He sees the destruction of the home God established on earth as being destroyed because of the willingness of this nation to let it happen.

That not only does this nation allow all this evil; it makes it legal. This nation protects the sinner to sin all he wants while warning the Christians to back off or face lawsuits. Sin is called right and God and his children are called wrong.

And it is true according to the Bible that God does hate some things though God loves the human race.  And there are  people God hates and there is Bible to prove this. God is not always pasting big happy faces on people.  Sometimes he puts big sad faces with eyes drenched in tears. He loved Jacob and hated Esau. God said his hand wounds as well as heal.

One preacher said that God saves with his arm, heals with his hand, and casts out devils with his finger. But he is also a God of judgment. He definitely  sends judgment on people for their sins. It is called justice. God always more than evens the score.

These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. (Proverbs 6:16-19)

Many may not want to see it or believe it but the Bible does say that God hates certain things. IE: if you lie God hates your tongue.  It is there as plain as ever. He hates false witnesses and troublemakers. Tale-bearing has even caused innocent people to be murdered. God hates a lying, gossiping, trouble-making, slandering backbiter.

If you shed innocent blood God hates you. No one can take Proverbs 6 and say it is not what God said. It is what he said. He hates certain things and certain people. Does anyone actually think that God loves people who sin? If you do then you misunderstand the message of the Bible. Adam (all of us) sinned and died for it. If we sin we die.  We are dead while we live. God is a God of the living and not of the dead. Sin kills and Jesus is life not death.

But she that lives in pleasure is dead while she lives. (1 Timothy 5:6) and don’t think that just means widows. It means anyone who lives in pleasure is dead while they live. Does God love dead things? I think not.

Christ is LIFE. How could LIFE love dead people? There is no death in God neither is there darkness.

God is not a big fluffy cuddly teddy bear up in the sky who just wants us to do whatever we want. God didn’t make us to wild party and die. But to love him and obey him. And live forever with him in paradise.

For our God is a consuming fire. (Hebrews 12:29)

And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commands all men every where to repent: (Acts 17:30)

God is a consuming fire who at one time winked at man’s ignorance but now commands all men everywhere to repent. Dismiss immediately those images of a wimpy bony weak sickly looking Jesus depicted in paintings by artists who saw him as they saw themselves perhaps.

And whoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.(Revelation of Jesus Christ 20:15) [notice the word cast here? No one will willingly go to the lake of fire. They will be cast in against their will]

He is a great and terrible God out of whose mouth comes fire.  But in his love he sent His Son to die for us so we will not be cast into hell by his angels someday for doing what he hates; sin.

7Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations also of the hills moved and were shaken, because he was wroth. 8There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it.9He bowed the heavens also, and came down: and darkness was under his feet. 10And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: yea, he did fly upon the wings of the wind. 11He made darkness his secret place; his pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies. 12At the brightness that was before him his thick clouds passed, hail stones and coals of fire. 13The LORD also thundered in the heavens, and the Highest gave his voice; hail stones and coals of fire. 14Yea, he sent out his arrows, and scattered them; and he shot out lightnings, and discomfited them. 15Then the channels of waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered at thy rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of thy nostrils. (Psalm 18)

He loves you, but your tongue is a an object of his hate if you tell lies. Why? because he commanded man not to lie so any tongue that lies cannot be an object of his love. Same goes for the other things he hates.

Reverend Phelps is a fire and brimstone preacher of the first rank. He takes the Bible literally when he speaks of God laughing and mocking at the sinner as he falls into eternal darkness and hell for rejecting the Son of God.

(Proverbs 1:26) I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;

These passages are about God’s response to anyone who casts aside his counsel and love.

With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself unsavory. (2 Samuel 22:27)

Reverend Phelps doesn’t see the war as from God but believes what James the apostle said here in his letter.

From where come wars and fightings among you ? come they not from this, even from your lusts that war in your members? (James 4:1)

And said, O full of all subtlety and all mischief, you child of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord? (Acts 13:10) [The Apostle Paul said these words to a sinner.]

Jesus said to those who rejected his love and teachings that they were going to a place where the worm dies not and the fire is not quenched.

They have translated the Bible out of the original Hebrew and Greek.  And after two- thousand years of the Greek translation with revisions of the New Testament it still says there is a red-hot hell that God prepared for the devil and his angels.

Like John Hagee preaches, “You say you don’t believe in hell? Matters not you’re still going there.”

“But God is love.” they say, “He wants us to have fun all the time.” God isn’t condemning us he understands. But what does God really say?

The soul that sins, it shall die. (Ezekiel 18:20) It cannot be any clearer than that. No names mentioned here, but it is very personal...the soul that sins shall die. End of story. And there is hope only in Christ.

I have heard those who cannot see love as anything unless it involves  their own will and desires. It is never about what God wants; it is about what they want. “This is what I think” is the common statement from those who cannot see anything as valid unless they are the ones who thought it up. Truth to them is what they think. What God says brings this response,  “There must have been mistakes in the translations. God cannot send anyone to hell.”

“God wants us happy”  yet are clueless as to what God says happiness is. Happiness can only be found in the will of God.  Many counterfeits out there that masquerade as love. God alone is love. It is in him that our peace and happiness is. It is in obedience to his words that we can get to heaven.

Someone said that hell is the wrath of God against sin. So when Jesus paid the debt for our sins whoever rejects that offer will suffer the wrath of God which wrath is expressed in the eternal hell.

You serpents, you generation of vipers, how can you escape the damnation of hell? (Matthew 23:33) Jesus said this.

Reverend Phelps knows that God is for peace, that God is for all nations to repent and come to him. He knows that God is not for killing those for whom he died. He knows that God wants people to love one another not go to war against each other.

These things have you done, and I kept silence; you thought that I was altogether such an one as yourself: but I will reprove you, and set them in order before your eyes. (Psalm 50:21)

Phelps is the brunt of jokes as he without shame lays down the gospel in the most offensive ways.  But look at this man who was executed by the system because he did not act according to their beliefs and their traditions.

That is the very reason Jesus was executed by the evil system because he went against their evil and told them exactly where they were living. They did not want to hear it. They did not want to hear that they were wrong. They did not want anyone or anything to crash their party.

Phelps may be offensive in what he says and how he says it, but he is getting the message out that God hates sin.

I would not go out there and do it how he does. But the Supreme Court ruled in his favor that he has every right to protest.

Read who God hates:

  • Psalm 5:5, “The boastful shall not stand before Thine eyes; Thou dost hate all who do iniquity,”
  • Psalm 11:5, “The Lord tests the righteous and the wicked, and the one who loves violence His soul hates.”
  • Lev. 20:23, “Moreover, you shall not follow the customs of the nation which I shall drive out before you, for they did all these things, and therefore I have abhorred them.”
  • Prov. 6:16-19, There are six things which the Lord hates, yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: 17 Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, feet that run rapidly to evil,
19 A false witness who utters lies, and one who spreads strife among brothers.”
  • Hosea 9:15, “All their evil is at Gilgal; indeed, I came to hate them there! Because of the wickedness of their deeds I will drive them out of My house! I will love them no more; All their princes are rebels.”

The way you tell it, Fred Phelps does sound like a most unpleasant guy.
    This bit concerned me:
“Phelps may be offensive in what he says and how he says it, but…”
Always worrying when someone says “but” after a beginning like that – as if they’re excusing it.
Also, you used the word “may” – Phelps may be offensive. Didn’t you mean “is”? He is offensive?

  2. BUT? Yes. BUT he IS getting the word out that God hates sin.
I agree he is offensive but as I said he is getting the word out there however his personality gets it done.
I admire Phelps not for the offensive signs, but for his grit and raw courage to simply call it as he sees it.
Some of the things he says I am against like blaming the Jews for killing Jesus when it was the Romans who did it after being persuaded by the Jews.God has blinded the Jews until the times of the gentiles is fulfilled which I understand when the last gentile that will be saved is saved then God will deal with Israel again. (Romans 11)

Thanks for stopping by my friend.

    • I only wish I could to to Nigeria, and to other places as well where the lost are crying out No man cares for my soul.
Thank you for stopping by, and yes Reverend Phelps is one of a kind, a real-life sin hating, devil chasing, preach against sin preacher.
He is hated, but Jesus said not to marvel because the world hated him first.
On your last comment, about “find love in a woman he wants to date”is not clear enough for me to reply to.
      Maybe you can explain further.
