God and Darkness and Light

Absolute darkness

Image via Wikipedia

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 3And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. 4And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. 5And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. (Genesis 1)

Not at the beginning but In the beginning God created. He created the heaven and the earth. Not he created the heaven and the earth and other planets.  No that is not what it says. And now we know there are numberless galaxies out there  each owning billions perhaps trillions of planets; but only one planet is named by name when God in the beginning created. The one we live on which is earth. Sounds like earth is singled out because all other planets are considered the heaven.

The earth had no form and it was void after he created it. Empty. This is what God created: the earth empty and without form. Darkness was upon the face of the deep. The darkness is not underneath the face of the deep, but only on its face. (There is a reason for all this. God is not a foolish God he is not a wasteful God. Anyone who sees what he made should know this. Sadly many do not. It is easier to project onto God their own feelings. They blame him instead of simply taking him at his word.)

So far God has said nothing.

Then the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. We cannot assume anything here such as the face of the waters is the face of the deep.

I don’t know and neither does anyone else. No one but God was there.

Then His Spirit moved on the face of the deep.

Notice there is no light. None. He created darkness? It doesn’t say that: it says he created the heaven and the earth and the earth not the heaven was without form and void and DARKNESS was upon the face of the deep.

But we can know that he did make the darkness by this verse:

All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. (John 1:3) Darkness would be included in these “all things” because darkness is a thing.

Look skyward during the day and see there our only source of light: the sun.

God did not create the sun….yet.

Note: Darkness  is not a ball of gas in the sky shedding darkness over the world. Darkness permeates everywhere: it doesn’t come to us from a certain source as light comes to us from the sun and moon and stars. I t is simply here it is there. Darkness is as natural as it is dominant.

However the sun is a ball of gas in the sky shedding light over all the world. Darkness is not what the sun is. When the sun goes down in the west we are then in total darkness. We switch on our Edison invention to have light to light our dark world.

It is dark by nature it is dark by divine decree. Where the sun is not shining there is darkness. We do not plug in a lamp in a room to make it dark. We plug in a lamp to tap into light so we can see, so we can feel better, so we can live better. Light is what we need. If someone says he doesn’t mind to live in darkness he is either blind or demented. Light is what we prefer to darkness.

Seven of the most beautiful words in existence which are recorded in the Bible are And God said let there be light.

As soon as he said these words there came into existence what he said. And there was light and God saw that the light was good. So far here God created and the Spirit of God moved. Then he spoke. He said and what he said came into existence. So God did not create the sun he spoke it into existence. That is what it says: he said let there be light. His command was immediately obeyed.

People blame God for evil in the world, for all that men do in the darkness they blame God. For all nature’s disasters they blame God. For man’s inhumanity to man they blame God. For all the darkness in men’s hearts and souls they blame God. They accuse him that he could have made a better world and he did not. Why? He has the power to do it so why did he create evil. Why does he allow suffering and death in a world he claims to love?

They lose their faith because God does not think as they think. They arrogantly think they could have done a better job of creating a world. They would get rid of evil. In fact they maintain they would not have created a world with evil in the first place.

So what are they saying in all their complaints and accusations? They are basically saying they are kinder than God, and wiser, and more powerful in their thinking. They place themselves above God in their intellect. They imply they are better than he. But we cannot come to God with our so-called intellect. Some say God only responds to faith. Hold it! Adam and Eve had no faith when they blatantly disobeyed God. It was God who initiated the reconciliation.. It was God who promised them a Redeemer. It was God who made them clothes to wear when they became ashamed of themselves.

Darkness was before light. Darkness was and light came into existence because GOD SAID. It is of eternal importance what God says. His word is what it is all about. We can speak and nothing happens. We can say the truth or lie and nothing happens. Not so with God when he speaks he can and does call into existence things; even things that were not as though they were.

….and calleth those things which be not as though they were.  (Romans 4:17)

There is a connection of  natural and spiritual darkness: that permeates our existence on earth; with the  spoke into existence light to Jesus Christ, and the cross on which he died.

People question God and accuse and slander him. You tube is full of accusing God videos. Websites where he is utterly hated and slandered.

But something happened at the Cross which answers and explains. It is the only answer that exists. Why do we know Jesus existed? Because history records he was born. He was the Word made flesh. Not as in….he suddenly was there in Israel. No there is more to it than that. A long history that began before the foundation of the world. God already knew what he would do before In the beginning.
